Abstract
The aim of the current study is to compare the extracurricular activities of the educational systems in Iran and South Africa. This research was a qualitative study using George Bereday's comparative model method, including four stages of description, interpretation, comparison, and juxtaposition. The study compared the extracurricular activities in the educational programs of South Africa and Iran using an analytical-inferential approach. The required data to answer the research questions was collected through library documents, websites, and scientific articles. The importance of this field of educational activities is in the effectiveness of the goals of the curriculum and some similarities such as the content of the curriculum, the centralized educational system, and the basis of curriculum planning between the structures of the educational system of the two countries. The findings indicated that in the area of goals and content of extracurricular activities, Iran emphasizes more on general and religious goals, and the implementation environment is mainly restricted to the school, with no specific time allocated for these activities. In contrast, while being similar to Iran in terms of cultural issues, South Africa has more breadth and diversity in its goals and content for extracurricular activities, and performs these activities at specific times, mainly in specialized clubs. This research can help the officials of Iran's education system in terms of reflection, review, and policymaking, take advantage of South Africa's experiences in the field of extracurricular activities, and take effective steps to further improve this area of Iran's education system
